In Japan, many local food carts make a pastry called taiyaki, or in English, cooked sea bream (a type of fish). For only 100 yen (roughly 1 US dollar) you can buy a taiyaki from one of these carts in the busy inner cities of Japan. This fish formed pastry is made with a batter that is similar to waffle batter, just a bit thinner. But don’t let this pastry fool you, it has a fun little surprise in the middle. Don’t worry it isn’t fish! The filling in the middle is most commonly created with red beans and sugar that are pummeled into a paste.
