This brown sugar pancake from Korea is a very popular street food, especially during the cold months. Hotteok will most definitely warm you up, just beware of the delicious, melty, gooey filling that gives this treat it’s rightful nickname: tongue burning pancake! Hotteok, pronounced ho-tok, is said to have evolved from Central Asia (areas such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Turkey and parts of India). Food Historians believe hotteok was derived from the traditional bread in these areas called “nan”. So, how did hotteok end up in Korea? Well, it was introduced first by Central Asia to China through the Silk Road, an important trade route that linked the East and West from approximately 220 BC to 1453 AD. It was then brought to Korea by Chinese merchant immigrants in the 1800s. Chinese hotteok is traditionally filled with savory meats. Once in Korea, hotteok took on a new and sweeter spin with fillings like brown sugar, crushed nuts and cinnamon.
