The city of St. Louis, with it’s French roots, famous for being the Gateway to the West and home to Anheuser Busch has inspired this snack. The Gerber is a toasted, open faced ham and cheese sandwich. It was created at the famous Ruma’s Italian Deli in 1973 and named after a customer, Dick Gerber. This sandwich has become very popular in St. Louis and has been recreated at many local delis.
